Collecting Casino Matchbooks, Donald D. Spencer (1997)
129 pages, perfect bound, $25 plus $3 postage Camelot Publishing Company, 39-B Coolidge Ave., Ormond Beach, FL 32174
Another of Don Spencer's books on casino collectibles, Collecting Casino Matchbooks is a profusely-illustrated introduction to this part of the hobby. A more extensive introduction, including names and addresses of matchbook cover collecting clubs and a glossary of terms for matchbook collectors is included in this book.
Photographs of several matchbooks appear on each page of the book, some of which made this collector's mouth water! There are eight pages of full-color photos in the center of the book. Matchbooks from virtually every U. S. gaming jurisdiction are included in the book, and there are match covers from cruise ships and the Caribbean area as well.
As might be expected, the majority of the matchbooks shown are from Nevada, but California card rooms, Atlantic City, Indian casinos, Colorado, riverboats, and Deadwood, SD matchbooks are also shown.
As is the case with most of his books, Spencer does not attempt to create a cataloguing system, nor to suggest values for casino matchbooks. His intent is to stimulate interest in this field of casino memorabilia collecting, and to illustrate the variety and beauty of casino matchcovers, and he accomplishes that goal well. I can't imagine many chip or token collectors who, after seeing Spencer's book, would not begin to save matchbooks as an adjunct to their main collection.
